Review: The Ugly Truth

This romantic comedy has to be one of the best in its genre’s that I have seen in a long while. Without giving it all away before the break, I felt it had the perfect mix of crude and wit. While still keeping true to the classic recipe for a romantic comedy, this movie also added a new element of unpredictability to it. I was left only guessing what Gerard Butler’s character was going to say next, as truly anything was made fair game! Full review after the break…

Apparently this movie hasn’t been receiving great reviews, but I really enjoyed this flick anyway. The movie was witty and kept me guessing about what could happen next. I found myself slapping my knee and actually felt my sides hurt from all the laughter at one point. Unlike most romantic comedies this really didn’t hold back on anything.

Katherine Heigle’s performance was fantastic and she truly provided an immersive experience for the viewer. Gerard Butler seemed to be focusing on delivering a non-accented line instead of just allowing it to flow out, which made some of his lines seem laboured. Guys > If you see this movie with a lady that believes everything this movie tells them, I promise you wont get laid. This is Not a make out movie in that regard at all. Ladies > If you see this movie with your gentlemen, don’t let this movie change your opinion of him. There is plenty in the movie that actually isn’t true!

I felt this was a great ‘keep-em-guessing’ romantic comedy that had a bit of something for both genders and give this movie an 8 / 10.

  1. Tom says:

I respectfully disagree with your assessment.

  2. Shannon says:

I am going to have to agree with Tom. It was gratuitous trash in my humble opinion. There were maybe two scenes that were funny and the rest of it was sexist garbage. Gerard Butler was so concentrated on getting rid of his accent that he moved his mouth weird the whole time he spoke. Katherine Heigle was better than I have seen her in a while, but still left much to be desired. It was a waste of money and time for me.

  3. Luke says:

I thought it was a good movie yes, but completely predictable, throughout the entire time. and it’s not sexist if it’s true. i found a large majority of the movie to be quite true, although im sure if you threw some stuff at me i’d disagree with it

  4. [...] a fun film! I know some of you disagreed with my review of The Ugly Truth when I said it was as good as it was, and as a result have downgraded the review for it to an 8. [...]
