What a fun film! I know some of you disagreed with my review of The Ugly Truth when I said it was as good as it was, and as a result have downgraded the review for it to an 8. Two reasons why I downgraded it, one of which was 500 Days of Summer was better than The Ugly Truth, but not as good as Star Trek. Hit the jump for the breakdown of my thoughts of why 500 Days of Summer was so enjoyable.

500 Days of Summer is presented to the viewer in the same manner that a memory could take you back through a relationship. The movie is about a boy who over the course of 500 days, becomes infatuated with a girl, starts dating her, has fights with her, and eventually break up. Very much like a memory of someone you may have cared for, the good times are often remembered first, but not all good. The film takes the viewer forwards and backwards through their relationship, but not once did I feel like I was trying to piece together a timeline or understand the order of events. It was a very light view, despite the ‘time-travelling’.

The acting by Joseph Gordon-Levitt was very well done, but the performance by Zooey Deschanel was a lot dryer than some of her past works. My belief is that she was just another girl, of average skill in his life, and for that reason… could be herself, instead of having to act much. Together they pulled off the relationship quite well. Although this movie, of getting over someone and moving on, is worth seeing… I can’t justify that you must see it in a theatre. Its a must see— on DVD. All in all I give this movie a 9/10.

The soundtrack to this movie was pretty awesome as well. Really put me into the right mood for each part of their relationship.
