Movie Review: Inception

Now that I have seen this movie twice, I think I can actually say I fully understand this brain twister of a movie to its fullest. Unless you’ve seen this movie at least twice I’m not sure that you’ve seen all that you really could see. Hit the jump for my full review and then my take on a few points within the movie.

Inception is about the idea that while in a dream state, people become particularly vulnerable to thought theft, but more importantly they could also become vulnerable to suggestion. When Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is given one last job that could guarantee his return to his children, he jumps all over the chance to convince his target to break up his newly inherited company. The trouble is, while in a dream state, everyone who is in the dream has a chance of letting their own subconscious interfere with the job. For Cobb this becomes particularly frequent due to the bottled guilt contained in his subconscious regarding the death of his wife.

The ideas contained in this film were very well developed and portrayed even better by the actors involved. It’s been a while since a smart complex and original idea has hit the big screen, and it’s been quite refreshing to see one again. I think the majority of people will see this movie and really enjoy the amazing special effects and the ideas within, but they won’t fully understand a lot of the concepts in it on a single viewing. This really is one of those movies that needs to be watched at least twice to catch all of the subtleties that are buried within.

Alas, a break in Hollywood from the farse movies and Will Ferrell like generated crap that seem to be making all of the money these days. The intellegent nature of this action flick was a very nice compliment to the original ideas it also had. I would suggest that you see this movie at least once in the theatres and then maybe purchase it once its out on dvd. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was absolutely standout, and Ellen Page was great as well. Wonderfull casting! I give this movie a 9/10 and suggest you see it in theatres.

Now here is my idea about the spinning top at the end of the movie. I highly recommend waiting to click Show until you have seen the movie. Show ▼

I agree, I liked this movie. At some points it also reminded me a little of Snatch or Ocean’s 11, with the group/caper dynamic, though a little on the darker side.

A thought that also occurred to me after I saw the movie is that perhaps Cobb never truly escaped from his own personal limbo at all. The movie makes no secret of the fact that there are multiple layers of dreaming, and he did mention that he and his wife went very deep when they were experimenting. Is it unreasonable to speculate that she was correct after all and he escaped limbo only to “wake up” in another layer up of dreaming?

I believe they made mention of the fact that Cobb was a very good architect, so perhaps everything in the movie was a dream and his wife was right after all.

Either way, it was a cool movie, though I did feel the ending was pretty standard Hollywood crap but w/e.

    Oh Em Gee *mindblown*

Who’s to say we ever even watched the movie, we all just dreamed we did and that’s why everybody interprets it differently. *gasp*
